Webinar Description

We are movement experts. Physical therapists create and deliver effective exercise prescriptions, physical activity plans, and independent exercise programs for the aging adult. However, these programs are helpful only if the patient participates in them. Unfortunately, patient nonadherence to prescribed independent programs may be as high as 70%.

How can patient adherence to activity programs during physical therapy and afterward be promoted? Physical therapists need to become behavior change experts. In this webinar, you will learn about methods that support patient behavior modification that increase participation in physical activity. Approaches to elevate engagement, increase self-efficacy, and encourage ongoing participation in physical activity will be described, and practical application through a case study will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify communication strategies to increase patient engagement and adherence

  • Describe methods to elevate patient self-efficacy and personal accountability

  • Discuss strategies for goal setting and progress monitoring that support sustained behavior modification for ongoing physical activity participation
