Webinar Description

The APTA and other health organizations have begun mobilization efforts to promote health and wellness through non-pharmacologic means. As such, the De-Prescribing Movement, led by a team of pharmacists and geriatricians, was born. Polypharmacy, prescribing cascades, and interdisciplinary mismanagement of medication profiles are all threats that greatly threaten the wellbeing of an aging population. Pharmacological management practices can be daunting to physical therapy practitioners, but understanding the system in which the prescribing process is employed is essential to competently participate in the interdisciplinary care required for management of medication and drug prescriptions. Two ways to demonstrate this competence and practice at the top of a physical therapy license are 1) through medication management proficiency and 2) advocacy for appropriate utilization of medications. Through these means, physical therapy professionals can provide the cohesive, interdisciplinary care our patients deserve. This interdisciplinary presentation will detail the role of the physical therapy professional within the realm of medication management and empower physical therapy professionals to take a more active role in the screening, assessment, and management of patient medications to promote best patient outcomes for older adults requiring medication intervention.
