Webinar Description

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurologic condition affecting over 1 million people in the United States, with nearly 90,000 individuals over the age of 65 receiving the diagnosis annually. Individuals with PD experience a wide and variable set of symptoms affected by many different factors that are likely to change over time as a person ages. The 5M’s (Matters most, Medications, Mind, Mobility, and Multi-complexity) provides a framework that provides a holistic and comprehensive approach to the care of an individual with such a disease. Using the 5Ms framework allows for person-centered  goals,  recognizing the interaction between medications, function, and patient safety, and allows for addressing cognitive status, optimizing movement and considering co-occurring conditions. The purpose of this session is to provide a framework integrating the current best evidence for physical therapist management of individuals with Parkinson disease using the 5M’s to ensure optimal outcomes over the course of the disease process.

Learning Objectives

  • Integrate the 5M’s framework into patient examination

  • Incorporate current CPG and best available evidence using the 5M’s model into examination and intervention planning for individuals with PD.

  • Synthesize a care plan using the 5M’s model that is both comprehensive and specific to the unique needs of individuals with PD.
